Zach Birmingham is a Senior Environmental Specialist with the Port of San Diego’s Energy Team. He started with the Port in 2011 as an Intern, and has worked with the Port’s Commissioners and Executive Leadership Group providing research and professional staffing support related to maritime, environmental, and international trade topics. Since 2014, Zach has worked on Cleantech and Smart City initiatives at the Port to incorporate real time data into the organization’s decision making framework. He began his career as a sailor, and currently holds a near coastal, one hundred ton, commercial master’s license. He has served on vessels throughout the Pacific, Oceania, the Middle East, and Latin America. Zach obtained his B.A. in Global Studies and Maritime Affairs from California State University, Maritime Academy, and a Master’s in International Affairs from the School of Global Policy and Strategy at the University of California San Diego. He became involved with Ocean Connectors through the LEAD San Diego IMPACT program.
